Description

Details

The ECTED Max is a selectable traction device; an on/off switch is mounted near the driver. When “off” – the clutch pack, which is located behind the side gear provides the limited slip mode. As torque increases, the separating forces within the differential gears increase, causing the clutch pack to be compressed and thereby providing bias torque to the high traction wheel – your performance limited slip differential action. When selected “on”, current is sent to the electromagnetic coil. The coil is retained by a clip that fits over one of the bearing cap bolts, making it non-rotational. The coil rides on a ball bearing. The ball bearings spin with the differential case.

The coil creates a magnetic flux so that the pilot cone is pulled into engagement with the differential case. This frictional engagement causes the bearing balls to ride up on a ramp machined into the side gear. This radial travel of the balls also causes lateral movement of the side gear. The lateral movement of the side gear applies a force onto the center block. The center block has an elongated hole that the center pin fits through, allowing it to float. The center block applies force to the opposite side gear, compressing the clutch pack giving the user a solid axle assembly – the spool/locker performance you desire at the strip or off-road.

The product appears to be excellent. The instruction manual has some very destinct gaps. Service as far as E-mail leaves a LOT to be desired. The first email took 2 weeks for a response and I'm still waiting on the last 1. No toll free number-Yes I'm cheap. (Posted on 3/2/2014)

I recently purchased a front and rear Auburn electric locker for my 2008 jeep wrangler unlimited along with a set of 4.88 yukon gears. So far the lockers work really well, with the flip of the switch they lock and unlock. I only have about 150miles on them so far and thats in deep sand trails no rocks yet (Southwest florida no rocks or big climbs in my area) so time will tell how they hold up. As far as the front locker goes it's limited slip when not locked so I can definitely tell a little bit of difference in steering while on the street, I don't want to say it's harder to steer but it defiinitely fights a little more to turn which is to be expected coming from an open stock diff.
Im very very happy with them so far and will follow up with a review in the next 6months or so to see how they hold up. Also Aaron at 4ws.com was super helpfull with questions and answered emails right away!! Thanks (Posted on 3/2/2014)

Considering I've never set up a ring & pinion or differential I am very pleased with the results locks up when tuned on, unlocks like a limited slip when turned off (when it feels like it).You just have to remember that when modifying some modifications are necessary to get it right, both front and rear needed some grinding, on this one (DANA 30), ring gear side bearing cap had a high spot and yes the shims on the magnet side need be trimmed down to fit flush. This is my first time every buying an aftermarket bumper for any Wrangler, I do not do any rock crawling, but I do wheel my JK.

The fit and finish is top notch, bumper looks great, foglights fitting it is a nice touch, and the bumper adds a lot of needed clearance. Big improvement over stock, I ordered it as a stubby, but about a month later decided I wanted a full width bumper, so I easily ordered and installed the ends. Very happy with the versatility of this bumper. (Posted on 3/2/2014)

Well as with any differential setup, there can be some issues. What reviewer #1 said is true, the shim will not sit flush on the magnet side in stock form and had to be trimmed down to fit. Auburn should provide a modified shim pack with each Dana 30 kit. Engagement at the flip of a switch? Sometimes instantly, other times I have to work the steering wheel to insure a full lockup. Disengagement can be smooth or with a loud bang depending on load. Limited slip when not fully engaged?
I have never felt or seen it. With the TJ on a rack up in the air...one wheel spins quite freely and you can hold the other wheel with your hand! Now I also have an ECTED in my Ford 8.8 rear and it is quiet and does have limited slip function so maybe not in the Dana 30 model.
Rated as better than a lunchbox locker, but not as good as the much more expensive ARB or Eaton. (Posted on 3/2/2014)

I was a bit leery when ordering the Auburn Ected because I heard that it was just a glorified limited slip. When I received it I was concerned that the magnet was on the opposite side as all the pictures that I had seen which showed it to be on the oposite of the ring gear. I was also concerned that it was a much thinner magnet. I went ahead and installed it, and routed the wiring, which for me seemed to be the most difficult part. The Auburn Ected worked very well, it tackled some of the most infamous trails with ease (Moab Rim, Cliffhanger, Kane Creek, Potato salad Hill), most of the time all that was needed is the limited slip. On the harder obstacles I pushed the button to lock it in but I'm not sure that it was even needed then. I am very pleased thus far with the Aburn Ected and thinking about replacing the front locker with another Ected. (Posted on 3/2/2014)

I've finally had a chance to use the new locker. The install was easy, no more complicated than a normal gear install once you get over the butterflys of drilling a hole in your case :).

The maiden run was @ Grand Slam Midwest in the Badlands located in Attica Indiana. The locker performed flawlessly. There is no noise associated with locking and unlocking....there was never any binding to unlock. Everytime I got to where I could not progress forward any more without a lot of wheel spin I simply flipped the switch and on I went. I was very impressed and am very pleased with my purchase. I would recommend this to anyone who wants a selectable locker at a decent price. (Posted on 3/2/2014)

Fantastic!

I've got one of these in a YJ with a Ford 8.8 swap. The locker has been very reliable and has worked flawlessly. Then only advice I would offer is to not take any shortcuts in install and be sure to use lock-tite on the cross shaft retaining bolt (you don't want to know).

Further, Auburn's Technical Support was fantastic. I made a couple of mistakes when installing the locker and they were very helpful in sorting them out. (Posted on 3/2/2014)

SUCKS!
The install is allot more difficult that a std. diff / carrier. The Dana 30 spacifically is not designed well to fit with the shim pack behind the bearings. The bearings & shims do NOT sit well against the magnet & the dimension changes w/ each attempted setup.

also several instances where the magnet did not fully lock & got stuck on a slippery surface. (Posted on 3/2/2014)

I ordered this to replace a stock rebuilt Posi unit in my Cherokee rear end which is now a ford 8.8.

The install is no different then a stock unit up untill you get to the wire routing. That is just as basic as running a set of driving lights say. Drill the housing, thread in the adaptor, pull the wires though, then slide on the rubber seal and then the cap. Then route the wife away from heat and moving parts up though to the cab and to the switch.

Only advise I could give would be to make sure you have a notched ECTED center pin if your at 4:56 ratio or numerically higher, before you start. As well as check your stock axles. They may not have the recommended length of splines needed for this locker. If not you will need to have themmachined slightly, or purchase a set of Yukon stronger axles for around 150 shipped and then have stronger axles as well as a locker that both assemble well. Thats what I did.

I have not driven on this locker yet, as I am doing alot more work at this time. But I dont anticipate any issues. (Posted on 3/2/2014)

Returning these ASAP. The mirror doesn't correctly mount to the brackets. Mirrors vibrate so much, it's nearly impossible to see anything. The passenger side mount only allows the driver to see about 40% of the mirror. Don't waste your money on these. (Posted on 3/2/2014)
