Spartan Locker

The Spartan Locker is a mechanical locking unit which installs into a standard carrier, replacing the open spider gears. The design of the Spartan Locker makes it easier and quicker to install than other drop-in locker designs. Spartan lockers use high-Nickel 9310 Chrome-Moly drivers and couplers for added strength. These units provide affordable traction and easy installation. Spartan Lockers are recommended to lighter vehicles or vehicles with tires shorter than 32".

A locking differential that can be easily installed without any special tools or setup equipment is ideal for a 4x4 enthusiast. The Spartan Locker now offers a that to those on a budget!

It has been widely used in demanding off-road applications around the world requiring extreme traction output and high-strength. Spartan Lockers eliminate wheel spin-up and therefore the associated driveline trauma is negated, the strength and integrity of its surrounding original case and other driveline components are, in effect, substantially increased. Cases that occasionally fail with open or limited-slip/posi differentials become one of the strongest links in the drive train when equipped with the Spartan Locker.

For traction output, strength and durability, the Spartan Locker rivals much more expensive, competitive lockers sold only as complete case replacement assemblies. It is a leading product because the Spartan delivers as much traction output, its end assembly is exceptionally strong, is much less expensive, and does not require professional installation (because the complete case assembly does not have to be replaced and realigned with precision calibration equipment). An excellent choice for off-road vehicle applications, performance enthusiasts also began using the Spartan Locker to satisfy their extreme traction requirements for racing, hot-rods and muscle cars.

The Spartan's operation is fully automatic. Designed to send power to the wheels with the most traction, the Spartan Locker will help get you where you want to go. While traveling straight the Spartan will lock the axles together similar to a spool. However, when the wheels need to differentiate in a turn, the Spartan locker will allow the outside wheel to rotate faster to complete the turn. The internal gears on the Spartan will overrun each other to allow this differentiation.

When operating off-road, the Spartan Locker will always send the engine power to the wheels that need it most. For example, if you are rock crawling and one wheel is in the air (complete loss of traction), the wheel on the ground will receive the engine power and keep you going. Whether it be snow, sand, mud, ice, etc... the Spartan will give you the traction you need.

I had an Aussie Locker in my previous Toyota and ran it for 5 years and it worked great. I replaced my truck with a 4runner and tried the Spartan locker this time. In both cases, I had the lockers professionally installed and since both 4x4s had the same model motor (ie weight), axle, differential, and tires (BFG 33AT) on each, I can compare them well. I've run the Spartan for one summer already -- a dozen trails including >100 of miles of forest roads, to sand, loose rock in Telluride, crawling granite boulders in the Sierras; everything but mud -- so I got to test it out adequately and I would recommend the Spartan locker without reservations. It locks when it should and doesn't make a lot of noise. Of course, like any auto/lunchbox locker, you need to clutch around corners in the city (i.e. you should have a 5speed transmission). I've noticed that the Spartan is more forgiving in this respect than the Aussie was. The Spartan also seems to have a bit quieter ratcheting (click-click) sound around the corners (although I like that sound myself). I love it and recommend it. My brother has had a couple ARBs in his rigs, and they work great, but I don't see any advantage, they cost a lot more, and the complexity adds more failure opportunities (like air leak) -- so I recommend an autolocker like this one over the ARB unless you have an AT and it's your DD. PS. Don't run this in the front in your DD; I use a limited slip up front, or use an ARB. Review by sasrunnerca (Posted on 3/2/2014)
